A village that voted itself into existence
Loch Arbour covers about 0.14 square miles and counted 224 residents in the 2020 Census, up from 194 in 2010. It exists because of a fight over the beach. On April 23, 1957, residents split off from Ocean Township to stop a planned apartment development on the oceanfront, and in doing so took the township's last piece of shoreline with them. It is still run under New Jersey's old Village form of government, one of very few places that are, and its name is borrowed from Lochaber in the Scottish Highlands.
The place keeps surprising people. Heavyweight James J. Corbett trained here in 1892 before he took the title from John L. Sullivan. And in 2017 the village won a state ruling that let it send its children to the Asbury Park district rather than Ocean Township's, which cut the school portion of residents' tax bills by more than half. A town that small and that stubborn tends to hold on to what it has, jewelry included.
The drive from Loch Arbour to our Farmingdale store
Main Street, Route 71, is the village's spine. Head south on it across the Deal Lake bridge and you are in Asbury Park within a minute. Turn west on Route 66, follow it out to where it joins Route 33 by the Parkway, and stay on 33 west through Wall and Howell into Farmingdale. The store is at 68 Main St, Unit 3, with parking right outside. Budget about twenty minutes on a weekday morning and more on a summer weekend, when the shore roads fill up.

Plenty of village sellers arrive with very little: a chain that broke on the beach, a class ring, a pair of earrings from a relationship that ended, a few silver dollars from a relative. Small lots get the same process as big ones. Each item is read by the XRF analyzer, which tells 10K at 41.7 percent gold apart from 14K at 58.5 and 18K at 75 without marking the piece, then weighed on a certified scale you can see. Sterling at 92.5 percent silver is kept away from plate, and a coin is checked for date and mint mark before anyone treats it as bullion.
