A borough older than its borders
In the mid-1660s an English carpenter, Thomas Whyte, took up roughly 500 acres on this piece of coast and called it after his home town of Deal in Kent. The borough itself came much later, on March 7, 1898, when the Legislature carved it out of Ocean Township. Norwood Avenue, now Route 71, follows the line of the old Long Branch and Deal turnpike from the early 1700s. The year-round count was about 900 in the 2020 Census, but anyone who drives Ocean Avenue in July knows the summer population is far bigger, filling the big Victorian and Foursquare houses and the borough's Deal Casino beach club.
Deal is also the summer home, and for many families now the year-round home, of the Syrian Sephardic Jewish community, with several synagogues inside the borough. One small fact trips up visitors: Deal Lake is not in Deal at all. It lies just south of Allenhurst.
