A borough that voted itself into existence in 1905
Highland Park belonged to Raritan Township, now Edison, until March 15, 1905, when residents on the bluff won a separate borough charter after a long argument about schools and school taxes. The name is literal: the land rises sharply from the water, and the Raritan River is the borough's entire southern boundary and the line between it and New Brunswick. Donaldson Park follows that riverbank. Raritan Avenue has been the main street the whole time, and between a long-established Orthodox Jewish community and Rutgers staff who walk to work across the bridge, the borough kept a settled, stay-put character that much of Middlesex County traded away.
