A river town with a long memory
Bound Brook was settled along the Raritan in 1681 and incorporated as a borough in 1891. A bridge crossed the river here by 1761 and was renamed the Queen's Bridge in 1767. In April 1777 British and Hessian troops attacked the American outpost in town in the Battle of Bound Brook, and Washington's army wintered at the Middlebrook encampment in the hills just north. The Brook Theatre stands downtown, the Raritan Valley Line stops at the station, and the borough has a large Spanish-speaking community centered on Main Street.
It is also a town that has been through water. Hurricane Floyd put downtown under the flood in 1999, and the borough now sits behind the levees of the Green Brook flood control project.
