How do you get from Barnegat to the Brick store?
Barnegat waited a long time for its own Garden State Parkway interchange and finally got one in October 2010, when Exit 67 opened at the western edge of the township. That is the fast way out: north on the Parkway, off at Route 70 in Brick, then a couple of minutes east to Cedar Bridge Avenue. Figure 35 to 40 minutes for the 25 miles. If you would rather skip the toll road, Route 9 runs the same direction through Waretown, Forked River, Bayville and Toms River, but you will collect every traffic light on the way.

Two Barnegats, and what each one keeps in a drawer
The township was incorporated in 1846 as Union Township and took the name Barnegat on the first day of 1977. The name is Dutch, Barendegat, the inlet of the breakers, the same words that named the bay. For most of its history this was a quiet bayshore place of cranberry bogs, boatyards and fishing families, and the old village center along Main Street still reads that way, with the Mary Etta Cox House standing there, part of it dating to roughly 1829. Then Ocean Acres filled in the sandy tract west of the Parkway over several decades and pushed the township past 24,000 residents by the 2020 census. North out of town, the Barnegat Branch Trail now runs on the bed of the old railroad branch that once served all of it.
Two very different kinds of household end up in one township, and the counter sees both. From the older streets near the water: worn wedding bands, a pocket watch, silver dollars in a cigar box, sterling that only came out at Christmas.
