Where to Sell Your Phone in Central NJ

You upgraded your phone and the old one is sitting in a drawer. Or maybe you have two or three old phones piled up in a kitchen junk drawer. Either way, they're worth real money, and the longer you wait, the less they're worth.

Here's how to sell your phone locally in central New Jersey and get the best price for it.

Which phones are worth the most

Not all phones hold their value equally. Here's the general hierarchy:

iPhones hold value better than anything else. An iPhone 15 Pro Max in good condition is still worth a solid amount, and even older models like the iPhone 13 still fetch decent cash. Apple's resale market is strong because demand stays high.

Samsung Galaxy S series comes in second. The Galaxy S24 Ultra and S23 Ultra retain value well. Lower-tier Samsung phones (A series, budget models) lose value much faster.

Google Pixel phones hold moderate value. The Pixel 8 Pro and Pixel 9 series do okay on resale, but they don't command the same prices as comparable iPhones or Samsung flagships.

Everything else drops off quickly. Budget phones, older LG models, and off-brand devices may only be worth $20 to $50 unless they're very recent.

What affects your phone's value

Model and age. A phone released 6 months ago is worth far more than one released 3 years ago. Every new release cycle pushes older models down.

Storage capacity. A 256GB iPhone is worth more than the 128GB version of the same model. Higher storage always commands a premium.

Condition. A phone with a cracked screen is worth significantly less. Scratches on the back glass, dents on the frame, and screen burn-in all reduce value. A phone in clean, working condition with no cracks is the best case.

Carrier lock status. Unlocked phones are worth more than carrier-locked ones. If your phone is paid off, you can usually unlock it by calling your carrier or using their app. Do this before you sell.

iCloud and Google account status. This is a big one. If your iPhone still has Find My iPhone enabled or is tied to your iCloud account, it can't be resold until that's removed. Same goes for Google's Factory Reset Protection on Android phones. Make sure to sign out of your accounts and do a factory reset before selling.

Selling locally vs. selling online

Online options (Swappa, eBay, Facebook Marketplace) can sometimes get you a higher price, but they come with real downsides. You have to take photos, write a listing, deal with questions from buyers, ship the phone, and hope the buyer doesn't file a false claim. The whole process can take days or weeks, and platforms take a cut of your sale.

There are also scam sites that promise high trade-in values online. They send you a shipping label, you mail your phone, and then they "find damage" and offer you a fraction of the quoted price. By that point, they already have your phone, and you're stuck negotiating from a weak position.

Tips before you sell

Back up your data. Transfer your photos, contacts, and anything else you need to your new phone or to cloud storage before you wipe the old one.

Factory reset. Once your data is backed up, do a full factory reset. On iPhone, go to Settings, General, Transfer or Reset iPhone, Erase All Content and Settings. On Android, go to Settings, System, Reset, Factory Data Reset.

Remove your SIM card and any memory card. You'd be surprised how many people forget this step.

Remove your case and screen protector. The buyer needs to see the actual condition of the phone.

Charge it up. Bring your phone in with at least 50% battery. We need to power it on and test it.
